Event Summary

I return to the stage with the students and artists of Misako Ballet for Japan Day at the Harriet Tubman Cultural Center in Columbia, Maryland, performing Okame & Hyottoko, a character duet inspired by two enduring figures of Japanese folk and festival tradition.
The program offers an opportunity to celebrate Japanese culture through performance and community activity, and I am especially glad to contribute through a work rooted in character, folklore, and theatrical storytelling.
Folk traditions have always fascinated me because they preserve far more than entertainment. They carry a community’s humor, imagination, values, memories, and ways of understanding the world from one generation to the next. Whether the story is Ukrainian, Japanese, or from another tradition entirely, I find tremendous artistic richness in bringing those inherited characters and stories to life through movement.
Performing Okame & Hyottoko within a celebration of Japanese culture makes this appearance particularly meaningful, and I am grateful to Misako Aoki for continuing to invite me into work that brings together dance, cultural tradition, and storytelling.
