About the event
This summer, dancers from Misako Ballet Studio (Columbia, MD) had the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the discipline, rhythm, and joy of Ukrainian Folk Stage Dance through a special workshop that I hosted.
What you’ll see on stage is the result of their hard work, openness to learning, and their excitement at bringing a new cultural voice into their training.
At the St. Matthew 2025 Multi-Cultural Festival, they will present a dynamic dance from the Hutsul region of Ukraine, nestled deep in the Carpathian Mountains. Hutsul dances are unlike any others in Europe — vibrant, powerful, and full of life. The steps reflect mountain life: climbing, rushing downhill, echoing the rhythms of nature, and even imitating the flight of birds or the strength of animals.
It’s a style that is both earthy and exhilarating — and one these students have worked hard to capture in just a few short weeks of summer study.
