SUMMARY:
Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, a self-taught musician, became a leading composer of the late 19th Century in addition to being the musical mentor for the young Igor Stravinsky. There are three chords to his legacy: first, that he was a humanitarian; second, that he helped develop the musical movement of infusing classical music with chromatic harmonies and textures of folk music; third, that he was an unparalleled orchestrator as witnessed in Capriccio Espagnol, for which he was personally proud.

In the early 20th century, the Ballet Russes used his compositions such as Scheherazade, Le Coq d’Or and even this Capriccio Espagnol to stage lush, romantic and very popular ballets. Choreographically, one is inspired by this music to convey celebratory and romantic scenes from Spain.
