KOZACHOK

(Козачок)

Ukrainian Folk Dance

Choreography: R. Mykyta * Composer: Traditional

Run Time: 2 Minutes * Cast: 1 Woman, 1 Man

Premiere: May, 2013
Performed by Дух Tанцю – Spirit of the Dance Ukrainian Folk Ballet
at Ginger Cove, Annapolis, MD

SUMMARY:
One of the most definitive images of Ukraine includes the dance style and costumes from Central Ukraine. The dance is imbued with this style, of the Kozak dancer performing robust movements full of physical prowess and the female dancer imbuing each movement with delicate, tender lyricism. Furthermore, the Central Ukrainian style is more expansive and can take up the full amplitude of the given performance venue. In contrast to Carpathian dances which tend to stay in place and emphasize vertical movements; Central Ukrainian movements use the space more horizontally.
