SUMMARY:
One of my very first collaborations with Gerdan–Kaleidoscope of World Music, this beloved dance is from the Bukovynian Region, shared between the countries of Romania, Moldova and Ukraine.
Many people are familiar with the melody, especially after it has been immortalized in George Enescu’s Romanian Rhapsody; and many people love both this song and dance for its expressions of joy and energy that showcase the virtuosity of both the musicians and dancers.
This dance is performed as a celebration of Pascha serving as an allegory for the Resurrection. The male dancer, who would not have danced during Lent, explodes onto the stage imitating a Lark, inviting all the young people to come out, play and celebrate the coming of Spring.
